Domain Name Tips & Guide

When selecting your Domain Name some tips to remember are:

  • Ideally, your Domain Name should be easy to remember and spell.

  • Your Domain Name (not including the suffix) must be under 22 characters.

  • Domain Names must be alpha-numeric with the exception of the dash [-] (which may not be at the beginning or end of the Domain Name).

  • The suffix ".com" is generally for commercially oriented ventures.

  • The suffix ".org" is generally for organizations (not for profit or otherwise).

  • The suffix ".net" is generally for network or machine based industries but also for commercial ventures.

  • The suffix ".edu" is exclusively used for educational institutions.

THE MISTAKES not covering all the bases.

Business is stolen from successful web sites every day by people registering variations of their domain names. If you are serious about the Internet, protect your domain name by registering variations of it.

  • Dash / Nodash. If your domain name consists of two or more words combined, register it with and without dashes (boston-dentist.com, bostondentist.com).

  • Singular / Plural. If your name lends itself to it, register the singular and plural versions. You might also register distorted spellings of your domain name (linx for links).

  • .com / .net/ .org. Register your name with multiple suffices to prevent others from using them. [www.whitehouse.gov is the real thing, www.whitehouse.com is an 'adult' site]
